Description:
In part one of the Don’t Lose Sleep Over It workshop,
Deb Sutton will present the research conducted by the team at Jefferson Community Health & Life-Gardenside in Fairbury, NE. The team implemented ‘natural awakening’ to enhance the overall sleep hygiene and the health and safety of their residents while promoting a more ‘home-like’ environment. As a result of the program, in the first 2 years, Gardenside saw a reduction of 16% in antipsychotic medication use, 12.5% in falls and 87.5% in alarm use. Components of Gardenside’s natural awakening program can also be applied to other healthcare settings, such as hospitals and assisted living.

In part two of the workshop Connie Vogt from the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services will examine long-term care survey guidelines and how these have changed with COVID-19. Discussion will center around topics such as hand hygiene and appropriate use of PPE. The top citations identified in Nebraska long-term care facilities will also be discussed along with the DHHS guidance on addressing these deficiencies.

Person-Centered Care in the Midst of COVID-19 (live-stream event)

(bathing, food, daily routines, meaningful life/activities)

Dates: Tuesday & Wednesday, August 25th and 26th (afternoons only)

Time: 1:00 - 4:30pm (1/2 days over a two day period)

Location: Live-stream only

Description: Person-centered care changes how organizations provide care to elders. It involves radical change in how care is delivered to customers, NOT simple incremental changes or language adjustments. Elders, staff and family all benefit. Laci Cornelison from the K-State Office on Aging is excited to share proven person-centered care practices around bathing, food delivery, care planning, and supporting purposeful living that challenge the status quo of nursing home care delivery. Laci will also be looking at the different areas of Person-Centered Care through the lens of the new COVID-19 guidance. You won't want to miss her presentation on how to KEEP Person-Centered Care in the midst of COVID-19 changes.

While this event will be presented via live streaming, participants will have opportunities to interact with the presenter and ask questions throughout the day.

Presenter information:

Laci Cornelison, LBSW, AHCA, MS, Kansas PEAK 2.0 Coordinator, PCC Consultant: Growing up in the nursing home where my mom worked, I was a gerontologist from the start. Those years of hanging out with older adults while my mom said to "keep busy" turned into my passion. Now I hold the official credentials of a gerontologist along with a long-term care administration and social work license. My experience has included direct leadership and clinical practice in an innovative person-centered care home, college instruction on aging, program leadership and research.
